Medical Oncologists/Hematologists are physicians who specialize in the care and treatment of cancer and blood disorders. These specialists have knowledge of many aspects of cancer treatments including chemotherapy, pain management, biological therapy and psychological care. Medical Oncologists/Hematologists frequently coordinate treatment with surgery and radiation therapy. They are experts in the treatment and management of side effects related to cancer therapies, and they work closely with other physicians and members of the Oncology team.
A Medical Oncologist/Hematologist has completed four years of college and four years of medical school. As an internest, they have completed a one year internship followed by a two-year residency in internal medicine and a 2-3 year fellowship. A Medical Oncologist/Hematologist is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
