Footwear and Clothing for Walking

Clothing

  • In summer, remember to wear materials that will allow the body to breathe and wick away moisture. Loose-fitting, light-weight clothing promotes better ventilation in warm conditions
  • In cooler conditions, wear layers of clothing so you can shed as needed
Layer One (wick/breathe) - synthetic or silk underwear and shirt
Layer Two (insulation) - wool or pile fleece
Layer Three (wind/water) - synthetic material with wind and water resistence
  • Extremities -protect head, feet and hands from cold with protective clothing such as wool mittens, hats and socks

Footwear

  • Low supportive heel that rounds (bevels in) to reduce sore shins
  • Flexible sole. Should be able to twist and bend in the toe area
  • Lightweight, breathable fabric
  • Great fit. Enough room in toe box and wide enough so toes move easily
  • Heel should not slip
  • Replace shoes every 300-600 miles
