Walking: Comfort and Safety

Always check with your doctor before beginning any exercise program.  A strong relationship with your PCP ensures a detailed and current medical history and the approval of a safe walking program tailored just for you.

  • Encourge the buddy system by walking with a friend for pleasure and safety. However, if walking alone, tell someone your route and expected time of return
  • Always walk facing traffic
  • Walk during the day or on well-lighted streets
  • Wear reflective clothing if walking at night
  • When available, use the sidewalk
  • Avoid crossing at blind corners
  • Record your walking time each day
  • Vary your route from day to day for safety and to reduce boredom
  • Leave your valuables at home
