Target Blood Sugar Goals

As part of your diabetes care, it's very important to keep your blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible to reduce your chances for the potential complications associated with diabetes (circulation problems, nerve damage, kidney disease, decreased sex drive or impotence, heart attack or stroke).

Blood Sugar Goal

 Need for Action

 Fasting/Before Meals

 <130 mg/dl

 <80 or >140 mg/dl

 2 Hours After Meals

 <150 mg/dl

 >150 mg/dl

 Before Bedtime

 <110-150 mg/dl

 <100 or >160 mg/dl

If your blood sugar is not consistently at goal, you may need a diabetes medication or an adjustment to the medication you're already taking.  Consult your healthcare provider or diabetes educator for instruction.
