It can be a challenge to meet the needs of an older adult who requires special help with activities of daily living. There are many options available. One of those options is adult day care. Adult day care is a program that can provide out of home care and supervision for elderly adults who have physical or emotional needs. Adult day care can offer a break from the daily care required for an older adult. Adult day care is ideal when the caretaker works during the day and has no one to stay with the older adult.
These centers offer a safe, controlled environment for older adults. They provide supervision, recreation, meals, and may offer some healthcare and counseling. Some centers will provide transportation to and from the center. Some centers have special programs for individuals with Alzheimer's. Each adult is assessed to determine if their needs can be met in this care setting. Some frail elderly that would otherwise be in a nursing home can be cared for in adult day care.
Cost of adult day care varies depending on the types of services offered. Insurance companies may choose to pay for adult day care if the provider states that the older person would otherwise need to go to a nursing home. Medicare does not pay for day care. In some cases, Medicaid may help pay for the cost of day care. Some day care centers charge on a sliding scale based on income. Tax credits may also be available for the care of the elderly.
Choosing an adult day care center requires careful attention. A center needs to be chosen that provides the necessary level of care for each older adult. A nurse and a social worker should be on the staff. There should be one caretaker for every 4 to 6 clients. The center should provide activities that are appropriate for the older adult. Tour the center to assure that it is a clean and safe facility. Ask about staff credentials and certifications. After you choose an adult care center, plan visits on different days and times to be sure the level of care is what you expected.
