NUTRITION FOR THE LATER YEARS

audio clip

Neglecting proper nutrition is one of the most common health problems in older adults. Eating too many high-fat foods and not exercising is a combination that can lead to diabetes and heart disease. Malnutrition increases the risk for contracting a number of medical conditions. It is important not to neglect your nutrition. Make healthy food choices.

Healthy nutrition tips:

  • eat plenty of high-fiber foods like fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains
  • cut down on high-fat foods
  • consider taking a daily vitamin and mineral supplement
  • avoid using too much salt
  • keep plenty of easily prepared nutritious foods handy to snack on
  • drink milk and eat other dairy products to get plenty of calcium to keep your bones healthy
  • dietary supplement drinks are useful
  • use a microwave oven to make cooking easier and
  • order Meals on Wheels or low-cost meals at your local senior center, if you don't have the energy or interest to cook healthy meals

As you grow older, you may lose some of your sense of smell or sense of taste. This means you may need to have more highly seasoned food in order to be able to enjoy it. There are many spices that will not upset your digestion but will add flavor, such as lemon juice, lemon pepper, garlic, or herbs.

Ask your healthcare provider for your ideal body weight and try to stay near that ideal weight by exercising and eating nutritious foods. A good nutritionist can help you with your diet. Nutritionists are available for consultation through your local senior center or healthcare facility.
