When someone loses an arm or leg, or part of an arm or leg, the lost part can be replaced with an artificial limb, called a prosthesis. An artificial limb makes it possible to return to a nearly normal lifestyle, doing just about anything they want to. Learning to use a prosthesis requires hard work, time, and a good support team.
After an amputation, it may be necessary to work with a rehabilitation specialist, like a physical therapist. A plan will be developed. This plan will start with getting the amputation area to heal properly. It will include exercises to keep the muscles and joints healthy and strong. Often local support groups are a part of this plan.
The main goal when using a prosthesis is to be able to use the arm or leg as before. A variety of prostheses are available. There are special prostheses for almost anything a person wants to do. There is even a special leg and foot prosthesis for people who swim. It is possible to get a very life-like prosthesis for people who are concerned about the looks of an arm or leg. There is no one prosthesis that fits everyone's needs or desires. Each prosthesis is designed for each individual person. It is important for the person with an amputation to work with the healthcare providers to pick a prosthesis that will meet that persons needs.
It takes different skills and lots of practice to use an artificial limb. A training program is necessary to master the skills needed. Often a person may use a series of different limbs until all the tissues have fully healed and the right one is chosen. Early use and thoughtful choosing of the correct prosthesis will help the person get the most from the new limb.
