A bunion is a swelling near the end of the joint in the foot that attaches to the big toe. The foot bone moves outward, forcing the big toe inward. This movement causes swelling, pain, and eventually a bony growth. Severe bunions can become very painful, hindering a person's ability to walk. Bunions can be inherited, and anyone with flat feet is at risk to get them.
Poorly fitted shoes that are too small, too tight, and too narrow are the primary cause of bunions. High-heeled shoes with pointed toes are the main offenders for women. For this reason, women are more prone to bunions than men.
Bunion treatment includes wearing good shoes that follow the shape of the foot, provide ample toe room, and have a low heel. This decreases pressure on the area and often helps to reduce or eliminate pain. Apply ice packs several times a day if the bunion becomes swollen and painful. Severe cases may require surgery to relieve pain and improve the foot's appearance. If bunion pain bothers you every day, see your healthcare provider.
