How much do you know about stress management? Try taking the following true-or-false quiz. You may be surprised at how much you know.

#1. Many people suffer from stress related illness.

True. Many people are affected by stress. Within our busy world, many people find that their lives are full of both physical and mental stress. This shows itself in many ways: fatigue, headaches, stomach upset, diarrhea, and skin conditions.

#2. Most people find it easy to balance work, household, and social roles.

False. For many people, the demands seem too much. Balancing your work, home, and social life is a demanding process, and may seem overwhelming. However, there are steps you can take to minimize stress: eat right, get daily exercise, and take at least 5 minutes for yourself each day.

#3. Raising children, financial problems, and changes in jobs are known to result in high stress.

True. All of these situations are known to result in stress. Even though children can be wonderful, they put additional demands on parents. Remember, you need to work together as a team. The same principle applies at work and at home. Working together for a common goal decreases stress.

#4. Stress management includes getting enough sleep, drinking enough water, eating healthy foods, getting enough exercise, and learning how to say "NO!".

True, but how do I do all that? This advice probably seems unrealistic, given your busy schedule. It can be done! Start small. Aim for changes over 6 months or a year. Remember, your stress did not start overnight, so it will not go away that quickly.

#5. Employee Assistance Programs are a valuable resource for employees under stress.

True. Employee Assistance Programs are specifically designed to help people under stress. Most employers offer these programs. In addition, they are usually designed around your work schedule, so you will be able to go. If this does not work, consider getting help from a counselor.
