Psychogenic pain is a term that was used to refer to real physical pain that is caused by a psychological problem. It is now known as a pain disorder associated with psychological factors. Some types of mental or emotional problems can cause pain. They can also increase or prolong pain. Headaches, muscle pains, back pain, and stomach pains are some of the most common types of psychogenic pain.
The diagnosis of psychogenic pain is made when organic causes of pain are ruled out. A person with a pain disorder will complain of pain that does not match their symptoms. Over time it may be possible to relate an increase or decrease in psychogenic factors with an increase or decrease in pain. Since the pain is real, saying that a person's pain is "all in their head" is not helpful. Medical doctors and mental health specialists working together are often most helpful to those with this disorder.
A pain disorder can occur at any age. It is likely to cause problems at work and at home. People with pain disorder may have an increased risk for drug or alcohol abuse. Pain disorder is more common in people with mood disorders, such as depression and bipolar disorder. It is also more common in people with anxiety disorders.
Pain disorder can be either acute or chronic. Acute means that something happens suddenly. Chronic means that something happens over a long period of time. People with the acute form of this disorder generally end up getting over the pain. People with the chronic form may struggle with it for years. Those with the disorder often require referrals to clinics that specialize in the treatment of chronic pain.
