CHILDREN'S INSECURITIES

audio clip

All children feel insecure sometimes. Between the ages of 6 months and two and a half years, most children experience separation anxiety, or fear whenever mother is out of sight or the child is left at day care or with a sitter. This fear, as well as other insecurities throughout childhood can cause sleep difficulties and even nightmares. This is something that most children will get past if they feel loved and supported.

As children get older, they still may have times when they feel insecure. For instance, some children develop "school phobia" or fear of being away from home. Take the time to reassure them that you love them and that you will protect them. Give them something to look forward to, such as a special game after dinner, a special snack, even telling them that the dog will have an extra kiss for them when they get home. These things can help reassure a child that their world is secure.

Sometimes older children, even teens, may become fearful after viewing something on a television show, or even the news. Listen to their concerns. Help them to talk about their fears. Show them that you are trustworthy and that you care. If your child seems to have more fear than usual, or if it becomes more than you can handle, call your healthcare provider. They can refer you to help.
