It is natural for parents to worry about the risks kids face today. Abuse of drugs and alcohol, often called substance abuse, are among those risks. Teens especially need to know how their parents feel about drug and alcohol use. Talking openly with teens about this subject can build trust between parent and child.
Kids and adults turn to drugs and alcohol for the same reasons. Some do it because of pressure from friends. Others are trying to relieve stress or emotional pain in their lives. Some people do drugs to act rebellious or act more mature. Keeping these reasons in mind can help parents to help their child avoid substance abuse.
Let kids speak their mind, and respect their opinions. If they get positive strokes from you, they will not have to turn to their friends as much. Also, talking about their feelings helps them to cope with the ups and downs that teens go through.
Kids, especially teens, hate to be lectured. It is best for parents to gently bring-up the subject. Try asking them what they have learned in school about drugs or alcohol. Talking about a TV show that has this issue in the plot can be a good starting point, too. Keep in mind that scaring kids does not make them avoid substance use. However, they need to understand the real consequences that can come from drugs and alcohol use. These include being arrested, paying fines, and the physical and social problems related to addiction.
Remember that kids learn more from watching their parents' behavior, than from all your lectures put together. Parents should take a careful look at their own use of alcohol and other drugs. If a parent suspects that they have a problem, he or she should seek help. This shows kids what responsible behavior looks like.
If you need advice about how to talk to your child about drinking and drugs, or think your child may already be abusing alcohol or drugs, see your healthcare provider, school nurse, or clergy.
