ORTHOPEDIC EXAMINATION BEFORE EXERCISE

audio clip

Orthopedics is the branch of medicine that deals with injuries or illness of the bones, muscles, joints, and ligaments.

Our bodies are made to move, run, jump, and play. Those who have led an active life and have not had any prior injuries do not need a physical or orthopedic exam before they begin a new sport or exercise program. But for those who are new to sports or exercise, or have a problem or past injury, it is a good idea to have an orthopedic exam performed by your healthcare provider.

Check with your healthcare provider before you begin a new exercise program or a new sport, especially if you have a:

  • recent history of a sprained ankle or joint instability
  • recent history of a broken bone
  • any joint pain, swelling, or redness or
  • any limitation of movement in a major joint

Your healthcare provider may recommend:

  • a strengthening and stretching program
  • aids to stabilize affected joints such as splints, ace wraps or tape
  • shoe inserts to correct improper foot placement
  • medications or icing techniques to decrease discomfort or swelling or
  • sports whirlpool or massage

Exercise and sports are great fun, but sports injuries are not. Listen to your body. Do not push too hard, and get a medical exam, if needed.
