DRUG ABUSE RESOURCES

audio clip

Drug abuse is a widespread problem. No one is immune. Drug abuse affects the entire family as well as friends and colleagues.

Denial that a problem exists is common. Not only can the affected person be in denial, but, family, colleagues, and friends can also be in denial.

One of the best methods of prevention is education. Numerous resources exist both nationally and in every community. On a national level, contact the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information at 301-468-2600. The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse is available at 800-NCA-CALL or 800-622-2255.

Local resources may include:

  • physicians and hospitals
  • drug and alcohol treatment centers
  • hotlines and
  • employee and student assistance programs

Also, information and help is available from 12-step programs, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Cocaine Anonymous.

Support and assistance for the family is available at Al-Anon and Alateen in nearly every community. Al-Ateen offers support meetings to children of alcoholics. It is a part of Al-Anon, which is for loved ones whose lives are affected by the alcoholic.
