WEIGHT CONTROL WHILE QUITTING SMOKING

audio clip

Some smokers refuse to quit smoking because of a fear of gaining weight. Others have quit smoking, only to start again after gaining weight. The truth is, weight can be controlled while quitting smoking.

Reasons for weight gain after quitting smoking:

  • food looks and tastes better, so many former smokers increase the amount of food they eat
  • frequent snacking is used as a way to deal with the stress of quitting smoking and
  • a craving for sweets may exist after smoking is stopped

Knowing why weight is gained will help plan ways to avoid or deal with the weight gain. Most people who quit smoking only gain an average of 5 to 10 pounds. It is possible to stop smoking and still maintain a desirable weight. Pregnant women who quit smoking should talk to their healthcare provider about a proper prenatal diet and exercise program.

Tips to reduce weight gain while quitting smoking:

  • Portion your food. Do not take second helpings. Wait at least 20 minutes after eating to determine if you are still hungry.
  • Eat slowly and cut your food into smaller pieces.
  • Eat well-balanced meals 3 times a day. Be sure to eat breakfast and avoid snacking late at night.
  • Snack on healthy, low-calorie foods, such as raw vegetables, plain popcorn, and fruits. Choose low-fat desserts. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water a day. Select other low-calorie drinks.
  • Exercise. Take up activities like gardening, walking, dancing, swimming, or bicycling

Controlling your weight along with quitting smoking is not an easy thing to do. But it can be done when a person is determined to do it.
