CONCERNED ABOUT DATING?

audio clip

Dating is a topic that surfaces as young people mature. At first, teens are unsure, awkward, and clumsy in relationships. This is normal. It takes practice to develop relationship skills and to some, this comes easier than to others.

Because dating can be distracting and time consuming, many teens put off dating so they can focus on school, music, sports, or other interests. Group dates allow young teens to interact with the opposite sex in a safe environment. Being with different people lets the teen learn more about the kind of person they enjoy.

There is often pressure for teens to start dating; but since teens mature differently, there should be no set rules. Each teen is a special individual and rules should be determined in an open family discussion designed to be best for the teen's circumstances. Rules must be set and followed about dating age, group or couple dates, dating places, such as school functions or movies, and driving privileges for dates.

There can also be a dark side to dating. Know the risks and the value of gut feelings. Learn the warning signals of a funny or uncomfortable situation. There is usually safety in numbers and in public places. Remember the chemical risks.

If dating is a concern, talk with your parents, a responsible adult, counselor, clergy, or healthcare provider.
