Everyone has emotional ups and downs. For teens, changes in the body, hormones, responsibilities, relationships, and schoolwork all contribute to stress levels that may cause depression. For some teens, the blues seem to hang on. If the times when a teen is down are more common than when he or she is up or if friends, family or the things they enjoy do not improve his or her sadness, it may be time to seek help.
Symptoms may include a change in behavior, motivation or becoming withdrawn. The major signs of depression are:
Keeping the blues inside does not help. Some teens feel so blue they consider harming themselves. If a teen's feelings of sadness and loss of control are to a point they are thinking about suicide, it's time for professional help. It is very important to talk with a responsible person such as a parent, school counselor, nurse, religious leader, or healthcare provider. There are also local hotlines for teens to call for advice.
Almost everyone sometimes feels that it would be easier if we could go to sleep and not wake up. Then we would not have to deal with our problems. But when the crisis is over, we are glad that we are alive. The problem shrinks in importance.
