LEARNING TO LOVE YOURSELF

audio clip

How do you see yourself--as lovable, as a winner? Or do you see yourself in negative terms? Teens who have positive feelings have learned to see themselves as good, talented and deserving people. They probably learned this by hearing their parents and others give them positive comments. Teens who see themselves as losers, or in a negative way, may not have had that support.

Teens with very critical and negative influences may need practice and guidance in learning to love themselves. One tip to recall is that each time a negative thought comes into your head, turn it off and focus on:

  • the positive
  • the things you can do
  • the things you are good at and
  • the things that make you feel proud

If you have difficulty with self-respect or liking yourself, talk to your school counselor, an adult in your faith community, or your healthcare provider. You are definitely worth it!
