WEIGHT CONTROL DURING THE HOLIDAYS

audio clip

Holidays may present an extra challenge to the individual trying to lose weight during this time. Because of the wide variety of high calorie foods available during holiday celebrations, staying motivated to avoid these foods may be difficult. However, planning ahead can lessen some of the anxiety of having to make food selections.

The following tips may help prevent gaining weight:

  • plan ahead by mapping out your eating strategy ahead of time
  • eat something before leaving home so you are not starving when you get there
  • choose low-fat foods such as fresh veggies and fruit, low-fat chips and salsa, or grilled chicken and boiled shrimp
  • focus on socializing to avoid hanging around the food
  • have one or two favorite rich goodies without going overboard on them
  • savor flavored coffees or teas to help avoid the temptations of desserts
  • reduce stress to help avoid overeating
  • ask family and friends for support during this time
  • when encouraged to eat more, say, "Everything is delicious! I've eaten too much already." or "Thanks, I just had some."
